T-Mobile (HTC) G1 Tricks I Didn’t Know

I found these tricks on the android community forum and thought they were useful enough to publish.
Source – link

1.Holding the home button brings up your 6 most recent apps.

2.To activate the magnify glass on the browser click the trackball twice.

3.To make ringtones, alerts, and notifications make a folder inside your memory card each one containing there own name such as “ringtones” “alarms” “notifications”

4.Turning off the GPS saves battery life to do so go to Menu, Settings, Security and Location.

5.To rename a folder on the homescreen click and hold the dock at the top of the folders name.

6.When you want to change a setting just about anywhere on the phone hit menu, it’ll give you options.

7.Long press the phone key for voice dial.

8.In browser, and also in pic gallery-
when the zoom + – shows up- you can hold the + down and it will smoothly keep panning in.

9.To Cut, press Menu and x.
To Copy, press Menu and c
To Paste, press Menu andv

10. Switch phone orientation to landscape:
In web browser, go to menu>more>flip orientation. This will change the phone orientation to landscape so that you don’t have to open the screen to get it to flip.

11. Clear your Cache!

If you’ve been using streetview or the browser alot, the cache can quickly get big. I’ve only had the phone for two days and got 20MB back by clearing the cache on these two.

Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > Browser > Clear Data
Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > Streetview > Clear Data

-1
13. Saving pictures from the web:
Press and hold the image for 3 seconds, a selection will pop-up either to save image or view image. It may contain more selections if the image contains a link.

14. In the browser, hold down ALT key and roll trakball for fast scrolling.( Or press space bar for a fast scroll down)

15. To forward picture and text messages: Press and hold the message.

16. Use AnyCut (Application in Android Market) to put important contacts on your desktop, I usually use the text one because it’s also useful if you want to call them, just pull up the text screen then hold your finger on their phone number and you can view contact and call them from there, of course you can use AnyCut to make it go straight to their contact info, but I usually am texting people so that’s why I used text.

17. -in browser, long press trackball/pearl on image to bring up “save image/view image”
-in browser, long press trackball/pearl over url to bring up “open/open in new window/bookmark link/save link/share link/copy link url”
-in browser, press menu to bring up browser menu (go to url/search/bookmarks/…etc); long-press menu to temporarily flash the shortcuts

Thanks for this useful info. Any idea of how I can view files that I saved to my G1 phone via usb cable. Ones file is an htlm the other a jpeg. How can I view the files and open them in the browser?

  • http://www.namshik.com namshik

    alice –
the only way to do this is save the file on the SD (memory) card. if you saved the image on your phone when saving, transfer it to your SD first. when you hook up your phone via usb, the removable drive should show for the SD memory.

  • justgot g1

i have been sent images through email by attachements and inside email as well. is there anyway i can save these to my phone?

  • http://www.namshik.com namshik

if i’m not mistaken, you can move the pictures to the memory stick. then when you connect your phone via usb, they pictures should show in the removable drive.

  • http://www.namshik.com namshik

it takes a few hours for the tmobile spots to recognize your phone is 3g. i recommend you give it at least a day. when u see the 3g icon on the top, that means 3g is working. hope that helps

  • ana

i can i save ring tones from funformobile.com to my G1…

  • Sam

Thanks for the post. Is there any way to save the applications that we download on the G1 to save them on the memory card. I only have about 20MB left on the phone memory. That would be a great help since I am sure most of us got a 4gb-8gb card for the G1 already.

  • http://www.namshik.com namshik

sam – currently, there is no way. after the hackers are done, i’m sure this is a KEY fix that will be made as the on-board storage is ridiculously low

  • josh

So is there no way to download stuff on the sd card??!!? Like if I were to. Save it.. it just saves it on my phone and I have an 8 g and I would like to save it on that… HELP!!!

  • http://www.namshik.com namshik

    josh-
as of now, no. there’s an alternate solution to saving pictures. i prefer this solution over saving it on your device to save space. i’ll write a tutorial on this later today.

  • sergio ..

I’m in love with this phone , but I have one problem … How to save a number that just called you and its not your contacts.
The fone its very nice but if we dont have this feature .. it sucks …

    sergio-
u touch the number on the screen, hold it, then a menu pops up. select ADD TO CONTACTS

  • sergio

    Thanks dude .. you’re good!!!
Now I can say this phone “Rocks”!!!

  • http://www.namshik.com namshik

I don’t even know what I’m doing responding to all these comments for. I actually have a full time job as a management consultant. My blog is just a personal blog like many of you have. I just happened to get a lot of visitors when I started writing about the G1 I got and luckily, I’m pretty tech savvy so I’ve been able to answer most questions. T-Mobile should pay me for all this customer/technical support …

Maybe you guys can click on some of those adsense links and exercise those fingerettes! =)

  • luna

Please help me too. I will click every ad you have. I cannot see any embedded or pasted images in my gmail or pop email on my g1. I can see only a blue square with a white ? And I can see attached images. I have been searching for days for an answer. Thank you.

  • http://www.namshik.com namshik

    luna-
    hahah. funny.
to answer your questions, there is currently no way of saving “embedded” images in the email. this may be fixed in the future. my guess for the solution in the future would be letting the user press the image, hold, and a save menu would pop up.

however, you should be able to save images “attached” to the emails fine by scrolling to the btm of the email.

I have an UNLOCKED G1 (without a G1 plan) and I tried activating it with a prepaid Tmobile SIM but that didn’t work (It keeps saying there was a communication error with Google servers). So I was wondering – can I use an ATT GoPhone SIM (that has a DATA plan connected with it) to ACTIVATE it, or do I have to be on Tmobile for ACTIVATION.

  • luna

Thank you so much for helping but I don’t need to save them I just want to SEE them. If you have any answer I would love it but even if you don’t I am doing as I said and I am off to click ads. Have a great one!

  • fidi fit

    aim like a sidekick plz..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://www.namshik.com namshik

    fidi-
i agree with you. the IM client on the G1 sucks. try meebo from the market.

  • Bren

I like the G1 but the only things I dislike is that when someone sends me a video text I get it as a pic.and can’t view it as a video. When I get pic text I can’t save it. My battery die fast

  • http://www.t-mobile.com/friendsandfamily james

James: You have to have the G1 Data plan to use the G1, there is 2 options, 24.99/mo for unlimited internet, 400 mms/sms, or 34.99/mo for unlim internet, unlimited mms/sms >>> you will not be able to use the G1 on ATT&T currently, T-Mobile has exclusive rights for 90 days.

  • http://www.namshik.com namshik

    james -
not true on your statement ” you will not be able to use the G1 on ATT&T currently, T-Mobile has exclusive rights for 90 days.” you can use your phone on the at&t network as soon as it is unlocked.

  • Lynee Cero

I was wondering if there is anyway to save the ringtones from funformobile.com? My phone will play the ringtone but it doesnt give me an option to save it. I think it downloaded it but I dont know how to find the things that I have already downloaded onto my G1, any help is appreciated. Thank you!!

  • http://www.namshik.com namshik

    lynee-
if possible, i would suggest emailing yourself the ringtone(mp3) and possibly, save the attachment as a ringtone to your phone

  • brittany

I am trying to save pictures that I either downloaded or put on my phone to my memory card. Also my ringtones and new contacts that I just added… because I am switching to a different phone.. please help

    Thanks

  • http://www.namshik.com namshik

    1. move all your photos to the memory card
    2. if you’re changing to the same phone, contacts are synced with your gmail account so further steps are not necessary. when you setup your new g1 phone, your contacts will be there. if the other phone is not a g1, then you can export your contacts from your GMAIL > CONTACTS > EXPORT to a spreadsheet file. this spreadsheet file is compatible with importing into MS OUTLOOK for import into Windows Mobile phones.

  • http://blah ruby

    Wow. Very helpful.

  • jessica

can you store more than one phone number per name in contacts? i am having to enter people 3x for work, cell and home…

  • http://www.namshik.com namshik

    jessica-
    of course..
contacts > highlight name > edit contact
click the “more info” bottom > select another number type
a new field should be added.

  • Chad

How, if possible do you download and save ringtones directly from websites such as funformobile.com directly on the G1.

  • oldschools

how do I attach a file from my on phone USB storage into an email I want to send from the phone? It’s stored in the SD, but I can’t figure out how to access it to attach it in gmail. Help! and thanks.

  • jessica

Am I the only one that wants to be able to search my calendar? Any ideas? Who do I talk to about this?

  • HT

is there any way to store your contacts on your sim ? I had to create a csv file from an old outlook account upload it to gmail – then sysnc with my G1 – but this means you have to rely on the contact list in gmail – now the list is on the phone any idea how i can write it to the sim or memory ? Tmobile and HTC say it cant be done.

  • http://www.namshik.com namshik

    to all-
most of your requests should be in the new android updated “cupcake”

    HT-
there is not a way to do this with the default android o/s although i think i remember reading an app that does this for you. how i have it setup is that i have a category in my gmail contacts “phone” and my g1 contacts syncs with that category only. this way, when i’m importing/exporting, i’m not loading up all my contacts in my gmail

I just reset my G1 to it’s factory settings, now it’s asking me for my google -email and password. I typed in exactly what I put the first time I bought it and when it asked me for the same information. It keeps saying

“There is a problem communicating with the Google servers”

I tried logging in multiple of times but it just repeatedly says that ^.
    What should I do?

to Love My g1 – there is another application called SnapPhoto better than the default..its in the android market…
