T-Mobile G1 – Syncing Exchange/Outlook

There’s a lot of you contemplating whether or not to get the T-Mobile G1. It’s got it all, the big screen, keyboard, G3, apps, etc but missing Exchange support for those business users.

Syncing with Exchange is important because it comes down to email, calendar, and contacts. Here’s a solution that will solve all three but not as easy if google just created an application that synced Exchange (which I don’t think will happen in order to make people use Google tools).

The alternative solution I think that will work is as follows:
1. Syncing Email – Use the built-in email application with IMAP settings
2. Syncing Calendar – Currently, the G1 lets you sync your phone with the Google Calendar. As such, you can have your Google Calendar sync with your Exchange Calendar using Google’s software you leave running on a computer connected to the internet.
Details: link
3. Syncing Contacts – Use ContactsSync (link )

I’ll have a review up on the device tomorrow. In summary, the aesthetics looks a bit cheap but other than that, works well

Looking forward to seeing any more tidbits. I struggled to a similar solution, except couldn’t use ContactsSynch and had a world of difficulty getting IMAP even working. I posted details here: http://vodori.com/wordpress/?p=5

If you want to sync Outlook calendar AND contacts with Google then use gSyncit. Then you can set all your other devices to sync with the Google calendar/contacts.

I got the G1 phone more for work and came across this before ordering it.

I found MailShadowG by Cemphore, which syncs Outlook to Gmail. The software is marketed more as a back-up utility but it works well to make the G1 business user friendly.

I just use a dedicated Gmail account for that reason and keep my personal email separate. You will probably need to run the idea by your IT folks. A trial version exists and the full version isn’t that expensive.

You can “map” the gmail account to appear as if it came from your work email account too.

    Mike -

I agree. My company’s exchange server doesn’t actually support IMAP or POP (wtf…). So I could technically, follow your solution and have gmail mask the email to appear as if it’s coming from my company email address.

Like would be so much easier if they just supported exchange..

Why pay monthly fees to sync. CompanionLink syncs Outlook contacts, calendar, and tasks with Google from a desktop application. Pay once and sync forever; no monthly fees.

    mjoan-
not sure where you are getting the monthly fees. all the solutions provided do not cost a cent. also, all your software does is use google to sync with exchange. there’s no need to pay for your software as there are free apps from providers and google themselves to do this. the only additional service your software provides is syncing email. however, this is not a secure solution and a prohibited alternative as corporate email is private and thus, should not go through your gmail to go to your G1.

24.95 for that app seems expensive. Google offers a small application that you run on the computer that syncs your Exchange calendar with Google Calendar. Although it requires the application to be running to be have your Google Calendar updated in real time, I haven’t had any problems with the delay, especially when it’s free.

    namshik,
I don’t think that Google calendar is an option for all the biz users. Our app does Exchange contacts and calendar syncing. It’s a bit different, don’t you agree? BTW, we put ContactsCalendarSync on sale for two weeks. It’s now only $9.95.
